St. Nicholas is also celebrated on May 22, in memory of the day when his relics were transferred from Peace in Lycia in 1096 to the then Orthodox Bari, Italy, and laid to rest in the Church of St. John the Baptist. Saint Nicholas was born in the city of Patara in the region of Lycia in Asia Minor, to parents Theophanes and Nona, in the time of the Roman emperor Valerian. He began his spiritual life in the monastery of New Zion, where he became a monk. After the death of his parents, he distributed all the inherited property to the poor. Danas je Sveti Nikola slava kada pola ljudi slavi a druga polovina ide na slavu i to je podatak i narodno verovanje koje sam zapamtio još kao dete. Sveti Nikola je slava nepromenljivog datuma – 6. decembra po starom, odnosno 19. decembra po novom kalendaru, na dan kada je 343. godine taj svetitelj preminuo. Sveti Nikola se slavi i 22. maja, u znak sećanja na dan kada su njegove mošti 1096. godine prenete iz Mira u Likiji u tada pravoslavni Bari, u Italiji, i položene u Crkvu Svetog Jovana Preteče. Sveti Nikola je rođen u gradu Patara u oblasti Likija u Maloj Aziji, od roditelja Teofana i None, u vreme rimskog cara Valerijana.Svoj duhovni život počeo je u manastiru Novi Sion, gde se i zamonašio. Posle smrti roditelja, svu nasleđenu imovinu razdelio je siromašnima. Pošto slava pada u vreme velikog Božićneg posta,na današnji dan tj slavu priprema se posna hrana za slavski sto.
