The tradition from the 16th century is still relevant in Denmark today. If a person does not have a boyfriend or girlfriend on his birthday, friends and relatives throw cinnamon at him. This custom remained from the period when spice traders were left without a spouse because they were busy traveling overseas and supplying spices.
