LEAVE THE FALLEN LEAVES AWAY! Decomposing autumn leaves in parks and gardens improves soil and insect health. Collecting makes this impossible, and in our country the usual burning pollutes the air and poisons the neighborhood and the wider population of the settlement. However, one municipality in the Netherlands has declared fallen autumn leaves to be worth gold - ecologically speaking. Eindhoven encourages citizens to leave fallen leaves lying on the ground, which among other things creates a warm wet winter layer of leaves for insects to live on – which may seem messy, but is necessary. Martijn van Gessel, a spokesman for Eindhoven council, says they are trying to change ideas about what public spaces should look like - people have long been convinced that the grass must always be neatly cut and leaves picked up. But leaves left on the ground are very beneficial for the environment - especially biodiversity. At the same time, there are fewer weeds, and in summer, the growing vegetation needs less water. When it rains, less of it flows into the drains. Eindhoven is also installing 200 baskets for leaves - so they can be composted and used for city plants.
