The aurora borealis, also called Northern lights in the Northern hemisphere and aurora australis in the Southern hemisphere, are a unique phenomenon that occurs thanks to the solar wind. The Earth's magnetic field directs particles coming from the Sun towards the magnetic North and South poles. The particles give off some of their high energy to molecules in the upper atmosphere, which gets re-emitted in the form of light.
