Back in the day according to church's science the sun revolved around the earth. The church had massive amount of resources so naturally everyone believed that the church knows what they were doing. Galileo came up with the model in which the earth revolved around the sun. He was accused of heresy. They tried to discredit him in every possible way but the beautiful thing about science is that a trillions of dollars worth science can be disproved by a little guy with a two dollar experiment. Idol worshipping in science is very common. It somehow appeals to the flawed nature of human beings. Idol worshipping falls apart after a while and good science shines in the end.
