Today, the Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. Saint Nicholas is the protector of travelers, sailors, fishermen and rafters. It is estimated that almost half of the Orthodox in Serbia celebrate St. Nicholas, and that the other half go to visit them. Slava is a Serbian Orthodox Christian tradition of the ritual of glorification of one's family's patron saint. The family celebrates the Slava annually on the saint's feast day. The Slava is the family's annual ceremony and veneration of their patron saint. Also, the friends of the family come to the hosts's house, usually without a prior invitation (There's an old Serbian proverb about Slavas - "Na slavu se ne zove!" which literally means "One does not invite people to Slava", Slava is the most important Serbian family holiday, it is always associated with the day of a certain Christian saint. It is very characteristic of Serbs and is a sign of their recognition and identification. This unique form of family tradition among Serbs is present from the period before Christianization, when it was related to the cult of family ancestors. To all who celebrate today, may the Slava be happy! Today you are all my guests... enjoy the food... :) Dishes for St. Nicholas day are always fasting, and various types of fish are always prepared ... ... there is little bit from everything ... prebranac beans, potato salad, salad with tiunjevina (sweet corn, pickles, sesame, peanuts, garlic in granules, canned tuna), smoked mackerel, various salads (sauerkraut, ajvar, beets, peppers in garlic, gherkins), cream soup ... there are different sweets (baklava, pie with apples and wheat with whipped cream) ... There are all kind of drink... various juices, bitter leaf (pelinkovac) walnut liqueur (orahovaca) , red and white wine, homemade brandy, whiskey, beer ... who likes what ... It is customary to plant wheat on St. Nicholas Day in order to grow up until Christmas. It is folks believe that the presents should be given to the children, on St. Nicholas, so try to make all the little ones in the house happy with some gifts, nuts, apples, sweets ...
