The infamous "Acqua Alta" or high tide in Venice, Italy as experienced by me during a visit there in 2012. During periods of high waters, many of the public areas of the city go underwater and some of the first floors of building are inundated with floodwaters. While they are currently working on a very expensive system to stop the floods, Venice continues to be slowly drowned by this phenomenon. This truly is unfortunate as Venice is a beautiful and fascinating city to visit. #Travel

During ordinary times, do people utilise the ground floor or do they keep them empty, as they expect the flood?

I've read in the news that years from now a lot of Venice's areas will be under water because the city is sinking.
