**Nueva Ecija** was formed as a military comandancia in 1777 by Governor General Clavería, with the capital Baler (now part of Aurora). Formerly a province of Pampanga. From its inception, the area expanded to cover the entire island of Luzon. There are Spanish records that identify the 2 Spanish provinces in the Pacific —Las Islas Filipinas and Nueva Ecija. Poverty caused the King of Spain in the 1840s not to acknowledge Nueva Ecija as a separate country in the Philippines.
