Spanning a vast 286 square kilometres, Loktak is the largest freshwater lake in India. Its surface is filled with floating islands made of decomposing reeds, weeds, and soil, called phumdis. The Keibul Lamjao National Park, the only floating national park in the world, is the largest phumdi on the lake and Loktak’s star attraction. It is the natural feeding ground of the endemic brow-antlered deer, once believed to be extinct. What would be really nice is if the lake had floating houses as well! That would complete the marvel that this is!
