I was asked why I thought Facebook's standards were hypocritical in a thread on the outage they suffered yesterday and my response is too valid to the wider community to post in just a single answer where it is likely only one or two people will see it. And this is without mentioning the fact that FB is probably the biggest conduit of misinformation the world has ever seen. So here goes. For example their "flesh" algorithm, as well as filtering out pornography (which has no place on such a social network), often filters out perfectly legitimate photos too. Infamously it also banned a Pulitzer prize winning photo taken during the Vietnam war, because it showed an image of a young girl of 12 fleeing from her napalmed village and her clothes had been burned off. I remember watching a documentary years later and even as a middle aged woman she is still getting treatments for the burns on her back. I guess some sick people might see it as pornographic, but the same such people sadly will probably find something in everything. So while on the whole, with some issues, this is a good thing they fail to be stricter in other areas. FB Live in particular has live streamed so called "happy slapping", even against the disabled (not that it is ever right) and even shown in real time a terrorist attack in which 51 people died. I'd rather see a beach scene, full of holidaymakers enjoying the sun than even a single murder. And on that I guess I am not alone.
