So in answer to my question yesterday about the ancient proto-constitution of which only four originals survive I was of course referring to Magna Carta signed at Runnymede by the infamous King John (of Robin Hood) fame. He was cornered into signing away some of his absolute powers to his Barons. He soon reclaimed some of these rights. However, in 1217, as pointed out by @szbarnaus the king restored additional rights to the citizenry that had been taken away during the Norman Invasion. This accompanying document was known as the Charter of the Forest Again Lincoln has the best known original although apparently (that means according to Wikipedia) another original has surfaced in Kent. The British library holds a later copy. Lincoln is small but hugely significant
