Quite interesting and straight to the point article. I agree that the slogan tweeting, empty mission statements are all over the place these days. Well, when I started in consulting I made these mistakes. I wrote the mission statements for my clients, but I didn't dug deep enough to help my client in clarification. Everybody knows (well, almost) that the companies goal is to make profit by solving problems. When the purpose of making profit is backed by real values... this not only makes sense, but is supported by the clients as well. Mainly because the shared values are aligned. As you mentioned in the article... employees knowing and identifying with the core value.... that is IMO the weak point in every company. We can have really great values written on our materials, and we can spend millions on campaigns, when our client sees the opposite, feel left down and so on by unmotivated, uninterested, rude employee. A long list of issues and questions appear in this case which should be and worth dealt with...
Yeah it is an important distinction - a slogan is not a value. Interestingly the fuller version discusses in a bit more depth what values should mean to an organisations and employees. Sometimes slogans dressed as values are really fake I was providing consulation services for a major UK bank (not the one mentioned in the article) and their stated value is "to be number one in trust advocacy and customer service Two things number one is a ranking which means we don't care if we are s**t just so long as we are better than everybody else staff often feel unsupported so where is the advocacy and trust. If the staff don't feel it they won't pass it on to the customer. So it is just a slogan and meaningless white noise that is not borne out in reality and may even cause cynicism and affect staff morale
