Just caught an item on Sky News. Apparently Apple have developed software designed to detect images of child abuse on iphones. Of course Child Abuse is abhorrent and if it helps fight against such terrible crimes and saves victims it can be a good thing surely? However on the other hand it is snooping and that raises issues with civil liberties. Also if the algorithm works in a similar way Facebook's (too much flesh colour in an image so it often flags up beach scenes) how accurate will it be and will it lead to a big brother approach to "legiitmate sensual images" (sorry that's the best way I could word it). Also what would be the implications for LGBT+ individuals in repressive / homophobic societies. So overall a good thing or bad thing? For me if it could exclusively highlight child abuse it's brilliant and should be rolled out beyond the iPhone otherwise I am less than sure about it.
