For me one of the great debates is whether it is better to have a live recording or a studio version and while the studio version is usually more crisp (polished production) it often lacks the raw energy and ambiance of a live performance. The most obvious casing point is Metallica and In Justice for All... (the actual song) in which the drumming sounds almost like an electric kit during the chorus, but is so much more powerful in ANY live performance. Another example is Kreator's Flag of Hate. What is your preference. In the meantime for me the greatest live album I have ever heard has to be Iron Maiden's Live After Death. I like Maiden although they tend to be a bit more repetitive than most bands (who inevitably sound similar from song to song) and tend to listen to their songs that offer something a bit different. Live After Death elevate them to another level and it blew my mind when I first heard it back in 1985 and I can't even begin to tell you how long I waited for the DVD to come out to replace my worn out and obsolete VHS To boot it had a gatefold sleeve full . And who can forget "Scream for me Longbeach" and the immortal line, "This is what not to do when a bird..." Never heard it? Give it a go!
