Bit more about my home town. When the Normans invaded England in 1066 the first castles they built were known as Motte (keep) and Bailey (courtyard) Castles and typical comprised of a strong tower and a walled enclousre. Originally built out of wood, stone was soon used to replace what was only meant to be a temporary structure. Whart makes Lincoln almost unique (only Lewes in the south of England has one) is that it was a DOUBLE mott and bailey castle - featuring two keeps. Over the centuries it largely retained this design while other castles were added to and changed. Dating back to 1070 it makes Lincoln Castle almost completely unique/
