Over the past two weeks I tried something unthinkable, I went back to Firefox on my desktop and phone! TLDR -> Went to Firefox full time and ditched Chrome/Chromium/Brave. A long time ago, before Chrome existed, I used Firefox (and before that many others). However, WebKit changed everything. The original Chrome was so much nicer than Firefox, users left in droves. The truth is, the experience was faster, the browser felt more responsive, and Firefox/IE was an afterthought for many. However, over time Google as a company changed. Their ethos changed. They no longer wish to "Do no evil". I didn't feel comfortable syncing all my passwords and data with Google. So I looked at Chromium. Chromium was okay, when it worked (99%). Unfortunately some DRM content wouldn't play for mysterious reasons, and I would always have to keep Chrome configured as a backup because I would want my favorites and extensions around. So much for getting rid of Chrome... At least I was using it less. Then I transitioned to Brave, I had high hopes, they wanted to bring in some key extension functionality and have better implementations of IPFS, an integrated crypto wallet, and even paid me for my time through BAT rewards. It had a good development team that understood the web. This was the answer, or so I thought. Well Brave didn't deliver on its promises. - The Crypto Wallet in Brave is not very nice. The UI is significantly worse than MetaMask. Most brave users turn it off and still load MetaMask. - The IPFS features have subtle bugs, compared to using the IPFS companion extension by itself. Again I had to turn it off. - Getting paid for ads, sounds great at first. Then you get way to many notifications. Plus the payouts are absolutely tiny, then you need KYC to even get the rewards! There is entirely too much friction. Plus the Brave Rewards icon would regularly show incorrect verification status. Well, I was living with all those problems, and didn't switch. The fatal blow was the Solana announcement. When Brave announced their deal with Solana, stating it would be the default DeFi platform for the browser, I looked at the bugs above, and was in disbelief that they would add yet another giant feature, for a network that is quite new, over fixing the issues they already had... Their priorities didn't match mine. So it was time to re-evaluate. Enter Firefox. I was told it had improved greatly, plus have been following its progress for decades. It was missing a few key things, so I installed: - LastPass - MetaMask. - IPFS Companion - Privacy Badger - WebRTC Disable I setup Firefox sync, went through the settings. Things improved a lot since I left. The UI was greatly improved. Speed was on par with WebKit based browsers, and I saw no compatibility issues with websites I visit. Mobile Firefox used to be a disaster. Actually terrible, and again, I was amazed at their progress. The phone browser feels fast and responsive. Firefox sync worked as expected. It has all the features I had before, and I am happy to finally be out of the Chrome browser universe. To those that read this far. Thanks!
