He is also known as "The Man with the Golden Blood" or "The Man with the Golden Arm". At the age of 14, he underwent major chest surgery and was in urgent need of about 12 liters of donated blood. After the operation, he was in the hospital for three months. Realizing that donating blood saved his life, he made a promise to start donating blood as soon as he turned 18. Harrison began donating blood in 1954. It soon became clear that his blood contained unusually strong and persistent antibodies to the Rh D antigen. Harrison's blood was so unique that his life was insured for one million dollars. On the basis of his blood plasma, a serum was created that, when administered to an Rh-negative woman pregnant with an Rh-positive child, prevents the development of antibodies in the blood of the fetus and, thereby, hemolytic jaundice of newborns. Harrison donated his plasma every three weeks on average for 57 years. In May 2011, he passed it for the thousandth time, which is a world record. Until 2015, all anti-Rhesus drugs in Australia were made from Harrison's plasma. In May 2018, Harrison donated blood for the last time. During this time, Harrison's plasma has helped save the lives of more than two million (!!!) newborns, including his own granddaughter.
