“Diabetes: A Silent Global Crisis and the Human Struggles Behind It”

*Author: Mahamud Kamal* ****Part-1**** ✍️ *****Introduction:***** *I am Mahmud Kamal. I have been fighting diabetes for 12 years now. I have been able to control my diabetes. Now I am working personally to raise social awareness about preventing diabetes, and I am also trying to provide financial assistance to Bangladeshi patients who have suffered physically due to diabetes but cannot afford treatment due to poverty.* 🔥 *****Recent history of diabetes********:*** Since 1990, the number of people with diabetes has almost quadrupled. The prevalence is especially increasing in low- and middle-income countries. This disease is also contributing to the global increase in obesity because it leads to reduced physical activity in affected individuals. Diabetes can cause complications in various parts of the body. The risk of premature death also increases. According to the World Health Organization, in 2012, diabetes was a direct cause of death for 1.5 million people worldwide. A large proportion of diabetes and its complications can be prevented through healthy eating habits, regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy body weight, and avoiding tobacco use. Diabetes sufferers can live healthier lives through medical treatment. For example, through controlled diets, physical activity, medications, and regular checkups, complications can be significantly reduced. It is essential to engage in at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily. Also, healthy eating habits can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. The World Health Organization's report also states that approximately 420.2 million people worldwide have diabetes. In 2019, 2 million people died from diabetes and kidney disease. Diabetes is basically of two types. One is type 1 diabetes, and the other is type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is generally less common than type 2 diabetes. It is also known as juvenile diabetes. Because people who are diagnosed with diabetes at a young age are more likely to have type 1 diabetes. While type 2 diabetes is preventable, the causes and risk factors of type 1 diabetes are still unknown, and how to prevent it is not yet definitively established. Most people worldwide are affected by type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is largely responsible for this. Reports of type 2 diabetes in children, which were previously rare, have increased globally. *****Silent Killer Diabetes********:*** Diabetes is a silent killer disease that slowly damages various organs in the body. In many cases, after becoming chronically ill with diabetes, a person may realize that they are suffering from diabetes. When they realize that they are a diabetic patient, by that time the situation has often gone beyond their control. According to experts, a large number of people with diabetes go undiagnosed, which poses a serious risk to their health. Therefore, getting tested for diabetes and identifying the disease at an early stage is crucial. Worldwide, nearly half of the diabetes patients do not know that they have this disease. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) states that about 25 crore people globally are unaware that they have diabetes. Particularly, the rate of ignorance is higher among type 2 diabetes patients, as its symptoms gradually manifest and many people may not realize it for a long time. This is most evident in Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, 43.5% of people with diabetes do not know that they are affected by this disease. This means that almost half of the diabetic patients are unaware of their condition. Type 1 diabetes is usually seen between 10 and 30 years of age, but it can occur at any age. *****Primary prevention is best********:*** In my opinion, adopting a policy of prevention rather than cure is the best. Since diabetes is preventable, it is important to maintain good health without waiting for it to strike. In this fourth paragraph, I have mentioned what the primary steps for diabetes patients should be. Although many may find this unexpected, I have done it intentionally because of a heavy workload. Maybe some readers may not read beyond this article, but I wanted to remind them at least once about what diabetes patients should do. There are many practical aspects to controlling diabetes. There are many harsh realities as well as many realistic ways to combat diabetes, which I will share with you gradually through my writing based on my experience. I hope dear readers will stay with me until the end. Diabetes can occur at any age, so everyone should be vigilant. Let's say together—"We will win, we will win, we will win one day. There is confidence in the depths of the heart. We will win! One day." 📢 ***To be continued.***  ***🔍 What’s the response to diabetes in your area?
