The most famous, most visited, most imitated painting in the world, the painting that has been written about the most to this day may not be the best or most beautiful work of the Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci (as some experts claim, but it is most deserving of this artist 's fame.

The picture shows Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Francesco del Gioconda, a silk merchant and Leonardo's friend from Florence. Mona is an abbreviation of madonna, which in Italian means lady.

It is significant, above all, because it is done in a sfumato style, a style of spilled, blurry painting without sharp edges, as if everything is in a fine haze - and because of the unfathomable facial expression. That enigmatic smile does not reveal to us clearly what mood Liza was in when she was photographed, sad or happy, with her eyes looking at the observer from anywhere to approach the painting.

"Mona Lisa" is also interesting in that it has no eyebrows or eyelashes. It was initially thought to be so because of the fashion of the time in which she lived, but recent analyzes of the painting have shown that Leonardo painted it with visible eyebrows and eyelashes that gradually disappeared due to excessive "cleaning" (restoration of the painting).

It is said that Leonardo was so fascinated by this portrait that he carried it everywhere with him, even when he moved from Italy to France. The painting was with him when he died in 1519. After his death it belonged to King Francois I of France and today it is owned by the French state.
