Do you know what is hidden in each fig tree?

Here’s why figs are unique.

Although the fig is often called the queen of Mediterranean fruit, it technically belongs to the category of flowers, and the way it is created is both fascinating and frightening.

Scientists explain how figs are inverted flowers, and the fig tree does not bloom like an apple or peach tree. Its flowers bloom inside a pear-shaped capsule, which later ripens into the fruit we eat, and it is not just one fruit, but their set.

But that’s not the only thing that makes figs unique.

Since they bloom from the inside, they need a special pollination process because they cannot rely on bees and wind, and that is where fig wasps appear.

A fig tree cannot survive without those wasps that spread its genetic material, and wasps cannot live without figs because they lay their larvae there.

The female wasp enters the male fig (by the way, we do not eat male figs). The wings of the female wasp and its tentacles break as it enters a small passage in the fig tree, so once they enter, they cannot get out.

Male baby wasps are born without wings, because their only function is to fertilize females and dig a tunnel out of figs. Wasp females work further and further, bringing pollen.

Once a wasp dies inside a fig, it decomposes, and as sad as it sounds, it is necessary in the process of creating a delicious fig.
