Let’s be honest: no American president prioritizes Nigeria or Africa, and that’s okay. Every leader puts their country first. Nigerians must stop relying on outsiders and focus on solving our own problems. Trump’s bluntness has caused controversy, especially when he referred to Africa as a “shithole.” While many saw this as hateful, there’s wisdom in the saying: the devil you know is better than the angel you don’t know. Trump’s approach might actually help Africa in some ways. Unlike past leaders who gave massive loans to corrupt African governments, Trump seems less interested in these kinds of deals. This means fewer debts for us to worry about and more pressure on our leaders to take responsibility. I don’t idolize Trump, but I respect his honesty. He speaks his mind and is less likely to interfere in our affairs. This gives Africans the chance to focus on holding our leaders accountable. In the end, Trump’s presidency could push Africa to become more self-reliant. It’s time we take ownership of our future instead of waiting for foreign help
