This week's battle challenge focuses on the Molten Ogre:

In the largest and deepest of the Flaming Caverns beneath Molten Mountain, there lives a race of Ogres that has been forged in fire. The Molten Ogres are called upon by the Torch for the grandest Ferexia military conquests. Unlike their smaller cousins, the Pit Ogres, who must be chained and dragged into service, Molten Ogres are willing and eager to march off to a bloody battle. Their incredible confidence, combined with their unparalleled strength cause many who face the Molten Ogres to run away in fear.

A Promo common rarity monster from the Fire Splinter at level 5:

  • Estimated cost: $1.831

  • Mana cost: 9

  • Melee attack: 4

  • Speed: 2

  • Health: 12

  • Demoralize ability: Reduces the Melee attack of all enemy Monsters

Its been a while since we last had a weekly battle challenge that focuses on a Promo edition monster card. The Molten Ogre is a high mana cost, a slow lumbering tank that does decent damage and has chunky health. When paired with the Beta Summoner, Malric Inferno, you essentially gain additional melee damage due to Malric's +1 melee damage and Molten's demoralize ability. I rarely use the Molten Ogre unless its high mana cap battles or Up Close & Personal ruleset battles.

Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?

This was an exciting battle to showcase. When it started, I realised that I was seriously up against it, but going into the final round, I had an inkling that I may have a chance in winning the battle. However, this battle also showed why Molten Ogre is a slow lumbering tank, but not necessarily a tank that I would use in position 1. When comparing it to the Chain Golem, who has a shield and void ability and armor, it showed how those abilities turned the battle and resulted in my opposition clinching the win in the end. In fairness to Molten Ogre and the rest of my monsters, they were under levelled and showed a good fight and made my opposition sweat!

Do you like the Molten Ogre? Why or why not?

When you compare other monsters to Molten Ogre, the one that comes closest is The Kraken. Is it comparable to The Kraken - no, not a chance, but it's not a bad card to have in your deck. Under specific rulesets and high mana cap battles, the Molten Ogre can serve as a useful support tank but wouldn't be wanting it to be leading most battles as the primary tank in position 1.
