*When Hope Walks Home*: *Title:* *When Hope Walks Home* *Chapter 2: Behind the Silence* The bell rang, signaling the end of the day, but Aisha didn’t move. Her eyes were fixed on the classroom window, where the late afternoon sun cast golden streaks across the dusty floor. She wasn’t thinking about the long walk home. She was thinking about her grandmother’s weak cough that morning and the empty pot sitting on the fire. Sani tapped her desk gently. “Let’s go.” She nodded, rising slowly. They walked out in silence, past other students laughing and rushing out through the school gate. The two of them always waited—less dust, fewer eyes, more peace. As they walked the narrow bush path that led toward their separate homes, Aisha asked, “Why do you always try to answer questions in class, even when you’re not sure?” Sani smiled. “Because silence doesn’t change anything.” His answer hung between them, heavy and true. At home, Aisha met her grandmother lying on a mat outside. “You’re late,” the old woman said, but her voice was soft, not scolding. Aisha dropped her bag and gently massaged her grandmother’s feet. “I stopped to read a bit,” she lied. In truth, she had stayed longer at school hoping the hunger would pass. That night, under a flickering kerosene lamp, Sani read from a borrowed mathematics book. He read aloud—not because anyone was listening, but because it made the knowledge feel more real. His younger siblings slept nearby, curled up like commas in worn wrappers. He closed the book after an hour and stared at the ceiling. “One day,” he whispered, “this brain will feed us all.” In their two worlds—separated by dirt paths but connected by dreams—Aisha and Sani clung to hope, even when there was little else to hold on to.
