Does this happen at your house? As the hot tap gets to hot there is a distinct change in sound as the water leaves the tap. Just listening for this sound I can tell from the other end of the house when the water is hot.

not come across that myself, but when the new neighbours moved in above (we live in a flat) the noise from the new pump they installed was dreadful - whether it was hot or cold I have no idea.
