Chapter 2: A New Beginning --- The semi-private school buzzed with energy as students filled the corridors, excited for the first day of classes. Matt adjusted the strap of his satchel, a mix of nerves and anticipation churning in his stomach. He wanted to keep a low profile, but the whispers had already started. “That’s him—Matt Alvarado, the top scorer in the entrance exam.” “Isn’t he some rich kid? What’s he doing here?” Matt ignored the murmurs, walking into his assigned classroom: 3-B. He paused near the door, scanning the room. Rows of desks were already filling up, and a familiar figure caught his attention—Sofia Ramirez. She was seated near the window, flipping through her notebook, her expression focused. Matt hesitated. He hadn’t expected to share a class with her. After their brief encounter during the entrance exam orientation, he assumed their paths wouldn’t cross much. “Yo, Matt!” A voice broke through his thoughts. A tall boy with a wide grin waved him over. “Sit here. I’m Jason.” Matt took the seat beside him, giving Sofia a quick glance as he passed. She didn’t look up, her attention firmly on her notes. Jason leaned over, his voice low. “You’re the guy who topped the exam, huh? Nice work, man. Don’t let the gossip get to you. People here love to talk.” “Thanks,” Matt replied, offering a polite smile. The homeroom teacher entered, calling for attention. As introductions began, Matt kept his responses brief, aware of the curious stares from his classmates. --- The morning flew by, and by lunch, Matt found himself trailing behind Jason into the cafeteria. He scanned the room, spotting Sofia seated with a group of students. They looked like the kind of people who thrived in leadership roles—confident, animated, and engaged in a lively discussion. Sofia glanced up, her gaze briefly meeting Matt’s. She gave him a small nod before returning to her conversation. Jason nudged him. “That’s the Student Council table. Sofia’s an officer, right? She’s kind of a big deal around here.” “Seems like it,” Matt said, finding an empty table near the window. --- As the day wore on, the PA system crackled, and the principal’s voice echoed through the halls. “All Student Council officers and top-performing students from the entrance exam are to report to the meeting hall at 2 PM.” Matt sighed. He hadn’t realized that his score would come with extra responsibilities. The meeting hall was already buzzing with activity when he arrived. Council members and other top-ranking students filled the room, their conversations overlapping. Sofia was seated near the front, her usual air of confidence intact. She spotted Matt and motioned for him to sit beside her. “You’re here,” she said as he settled into the chair. “Didn’t really have a choice,” he replied. “You’ll get used to it,” Sofia said with a smirk. The council president began outlining plans for an upcoming campus event. Sofia scribbled notes diligently while Matt tried to keep up. “Mr. Alvarado,” the president called, startling him. “You’ll assist Ms. Ramirez with planning the event. She’ll guide you through the process.” Matt glanced at Sofia, who gave him a sideways look. “Guess we’ll be working together,” she said, her tone light but challenging. “Looks like it,” he replied, unsure whether to feel nervous or relieved. The meeting wrapped up with tasks assigned, and as they left the hall, Sofia handed him a folder. “Read through this. We’ll start tomorrow.” “Got it,” Matt said, watching her walk away. His first day hadn’t gone the way he’d expected. But as he looked at the folder in his hand, he realized he was curious—about the council, the event, and, most of all, about Sofia. ---
