Chapter 3: Threads of Connection Chapter 3: Threads of Connection

The morning sun filtered through the classroom windows, casting soft light over rows of wooden desks. Matt Alvarado sat near the back, trying to blend in, though his sharp features and polished demeanor made him stand out. Around him, students chatted, shuffled papers, and prepared for the day ahead. At the front, Mr. Isidro, their history teacher, cleared his throat. “This semester, I want you to engage with Cebu’s heritage. You’ll work in pairs to research a historical site and present its significance. This isn’t just about facts—it’s about understanding the community.” Matt leaned forward slightly. History wasn’t his strong suit, but this sounded intriguing. Names were called, pairs formed, and then: “Sofia Ramirez and Matt Alvarado.” The room went still for a moment. Matt looked up just in time to see Sofia’s shoulders tense. Her gaze flicked toward him briefly before returning to her notebook. He couldn’t tell if she was annoyed or indifferent, but the tight line of her mouth suggested the former. After class, Matt approached her as she reviewed the project guidelines on the bulletin board. “Looks like we’re partners,” he said with a tentative smile. She glanced at him, her expression neutral but cool. “Let’s just get it done. I’m free tomorrow after school.” “Library?” he asked. She nodded. “Don’t be late.” --- The next afternoon, Matt walked into the library a few minutes behind schedule, his chest tight with nerves. Sofia was already there, her books neatly arranged, a pencil tapping against her notebook. “You’re late,” she said without looking up. “Sorry,” he replied, sitting across from her. “Got turned around.” She raised an eyebrow. “We’ve been here for weeks. How are you still getting lost?” Before Matt could respond, Jasmin Cortez, a quiet girl sitting nearby, glanced their way. Sofia caught her eye and gave a small nod. Jasmin smiled faintly and walked over, leaning on Sofia’s desk. “So, working with Matt, huh?” Jasmin teased, her voice light. “That’s... unexpected.” Sofia rolled her eyes. “It’s a school project, Jasmin, not a life decision.” Jasmin smirked. “Sure, but it’s not every day you partner up with someone like him. Be careful—you might actually enjoy it.” Sofia gave her a pointed look. “Don’t start.” Matt chuckled under his breath, which only made Sofia glare at him before Jasmin walked away, still smiling. --- Matt and Sofia turned their attention to their project, but their differing approaches quickly became apparent. Matt wanted to delve into minute details, while Sofia focused on efficiency and practicality. “This needs structure,” Matt argued, pointing at his rough outline. “And it needs to be done,” Sofia countered, crossing her arms. Their back-and-forth caught the attention of others in the library, including Lucas Villanueva, a tall, confident student from a wealthy family. He strolled over, his trademark easygoing smile in place. “Trouble in paradise?” Lucas teased, leaning on their table. Sofia shot him a glare. “Go away, Lucas.” “Relax, I’m just observing.” He turned to Matt. “She’s stubborn, but she’s right most of the time. If you want to survive, don’t fight her too much.” “Thanks for the advice,” Matt muttered. Lucas grinned and patted Matt’s shoulder. “Good luck, Alvarado. You’ll need it.” --- As the session went on, Sofia noticed something unexpected: Matt wasn’t as clueless as she’d assumed. He asked thoughtful questions about their topic, even suggesting angles she hadn’t considered. “I didn’t expect you to care this much,” she admitted reluctantly. “I’m here to learn,” Matt replied. “And maybe prove I’m not completely useless.” She smirked faintly but didn’t respond. When they finished for the day, Matt caught sight of Jasmin again. She was packing up her things, moving quietly as if trying not to draw attention. On impulse, he walked over. “Hey, Jasmin, right?” he said. She looked up, surprised. “Yeah. You’re Matt?” “That’s me. Sofia and I are working on the cross project. How about you?” “I’m researching Fort San Pedro,” she said softly. “It’s... interesting.” “Cool,” Matt said. “Need any help?” She shook her head, but her smile widened slightly. “Thanks, but I’ve got it. Good luck with Sofia.” Matt laughed. “I’ll need it.” --- As they left the library, Sofia’s friend Lila was waiting by the gate, her bright smile contrasting with Sofia’s usual reserved demeanor. “How was it?” Lila asked as they walked home. “Fine,” Sofia said. Lila raised an eyebrow. “Just fine? You don’t think he’s completely useless anymore, do you?” Sofia rolled her eyes. “Don’t start.” “I’m just saying,” Lila teased, nudging her. “You might be warming up to him.” Sofia didn’t respond, but her thoughts lingered on Matt’s unexpected earnestness. Meanwhile, Matt returned to his dorm, reflecting on the day. For the first time since starting at this school, he felt like he was beginning to find his footing—not just with Sofia but with others like Jasmin and Lucas. He still had a long way to go, but it was a start. ---
