Cigu Salt Mountain The ancients moved mountains, Taiyen built one: The Cigu Salt Mountain. Originally the bay salt fields of the Taiwan Salt Corporation's Cigu Saltworks, this is now a popular Tainan County tourist destination. The main attraction is the Salt Mountain, roughly five stories (16.4m) high and covering an area of one hectare. Sometimes called "Taiwan's Mount Everwhite," it is made up of 39 thousand tons of salt, which have become compacted into a solid and extremely hard mass through years of exposure to the elements. The surface consists of gradually accumulated sand and dust particles, giving the Salt Mountain the appearance of a huge natural rock rising in the middle of a flat desert--this is in fact the highest elevation within the Southwest Coast National Scenic Area. It is particularly popular with Japanese visitors, who traditionally believe that salt is a purifying substance that keeps away evil influences, attracts good fortune, and cleanses the soul. Japanese travel agencies promote the Cigu Salt Mountain as a “sacred mountain" with the "cleanest magnetic field” to be found in all of Taiwan. It was in 2002 that the Cigu Salt Pans officially discontinued operations: the Salt Mountain constitutes the last batch of bay salt ever produced on the island, a monument marking the end of 338 years of salt making.
