The Celts were a race of people who lived in Europe and became a powerful force in certain countries from about 800 BC to AD 100.They became powerful because they discovered how to use iron.They realised that iron was much stronger than bronze,so they began to make strong iron tools for farming and strong iron weapons for fighting.

They no longer had to live the life of nomads.They were now able to settle down in one place. Using their iron weapons meant that they could easily defeat their enemies,who used bronze weapons,in battle.

They spread south into Italy,south-west into France and Spain and South-east as far as Greece and Turkey.They eventually reached Britain and Ireland about 2600years ago.

How they write.

They did not write anything on paper. However, they had a form of writing called ogham They are twenty letters in the ogham alphabet. These letters are based on straight lines and notches around a central line.

Ogham writing was mostly used for putting names an gravestones. Ogham is read from the ground upwards.

Festivals took place at times that were important to Farmers.
