When the beautiful 'bird of paradise' flower from Strelitzia Reginae blooms, it is a sign of maturity. This is a slow-growing plant, taking it up to 5 years to grow and give flowers. These plant is an important part of the Hawaiian culture and in their language it means 'The little globe'. They make a perfect gift, as they represent devotion, joy, splendor and a happy life. Their history in Europe goes way back, in the 1770s, where the Queen Charlotte's husband, King George in his desire to grow the variety of the Royal Botanical Gardens appointed the garden director (Francis Mason) with that task. Masson took an exploratory trip to South Africa, discovered the impressive plant that thrived in that warm and sunny climate. It looked so unique that it would not go unnoticed, and make it an ideal candidate for exhibition at the beautiful gardens. He sent the plant to the Royal Botanical Garden and it impressed the Queen so much, that she asked for it to be named after her. The scientific name of the plant was assigned "Strelitzia Reginae" (Reginae means queen) and its worth to mention Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz also was an amateur botanist.
