I know it’s been a while since I have written an Article but today I have I’ll be discussing things to do before you start digging into the hours and imagination for the book that’/s been stuck in your head. In as much as people think that writing a book is the easiest thing in the world I have to be honest with you, writing is not easy and it never is. It takes a really, really long time and sometimes it can be mined draining and an emotional rollercoaster of questions and constant rewrites.

Therefore, here are top tips on what to do before you actually take the pen or laptop and start writing, are we ready? Then let’s go!

STORY TELLING STRUCTURE

Okay this is more so about the plot, as a writer you can’t just write anything that flows with you and write it down, contrary to what beginners think a book does indeed have structure, it has a lot of stature at that. From the moment you introduce your Protagonist, Antagonist and also the Supporting characters. Everything needs to have a purpose and not just jumble things up because it just sounds good. Plots needs to have a beginning, a middle and finally an end, or in other words in needs to have an inciting incident, something that opens the story, rising tension, things coming in alignment, a climax (The Big Bang) and finally the resolution (The moment where every puzzle piece fits and things are good or sometimes good-ish. So before you start typing away try and read more on story structure, there are so many books and articles that can guide you with this.

STUDY YOUR CRAFT

And I know I say that reading a book can help you become a good writer and yes, yes it really does, however, it’s really not enough. In order for you to become a fantastic writer you need to first master the art of writing. Writing like everything else is an art and it takes practice and learning new tricks. Even if you are the best writer in the entire universe (which probably you aren’t sorry it’s the truth) You still need to look into new tips and information. Not only will you improve your writing but you will also find out that you have new avenues to look forward too as a writer so keep learning.

DON’T STRESSON PUBLISH

I know every writer dreams that they’[re book will be the next best seller, probably get a movie or a series adaptation and an even more ambitious dream is to win the Nobel prize for literature. That being the case the first thing that most writers stress about is the publishing phase long before they even begin to start writing, the questions of which publisher should I use am I even Good enough how do I get published What are the In and outs of the publishing game, how do I beat the System, Should I be self-Published etc.

Yeah I am aware that this can be a daunting task but have in mind you need not stress to much about this, the publishing industry is an ever-changing vacuum of knowledge that you can’t master in a day save yourself the trouble and take it one step at a time, don’t rush.

BRAINSTORM BEFORE AND STORE

Sometimes you can forget a key information on the book your writing. It’s okay to forget sometimes but it’s also frustrating having an idea so mind-blowing for your book only to find that it has slipped your mind and has faded away that quick. The best Thing to do is to dump it about. Let me explain, before actually writing your book why don’t your rite down all, and I mean all of your ideas on to the paper even if it’s not in order just do it. This will help you keep track of all your ideas and makes the writing process much simpler. It also helps you indirectly plan out and organize your book without making it a tiresome act.

Organizing all your ideas can greatly improve the quality of the book you are writing, you can find out which ideas are good and which ones need to be thrown as far away as possible, it also makes the book writing process feel less grand because you’ve technically started the process.

OUTLINE.

If you are a Pantser then ignore this step… but if you aren’t one of those who have been ordained by the writing gods to have an unconscious comprehension of your imagination process, then this is most definitely for you. I am Not Joking this really is for You. Outlining is a really important process in the writing community, and it’s not always sunshine and rainbows it can be brutal but it is worth it. But this only exists to make the writing process in itself less difficult, It can help you have fewer potholes that often pop up as well as airbrush the inconsistencies out of the book.it also helps shorten the drafting time of the book.

There are so many writing techniques (and I honestly mean many writing techniques that can be used) others can be deep grinding, specific and as detailed as possible while some can be really shallow and straight to the point. Whichever type of outlining you decide to go through make sure it fit’s best with your form of creative process.

READ YOUR GENRE

I know reading novels and other works can be really eye-opening but none more enlightening than reading novels in your genre, I know you are saying but my book is different and fresh from the genre that I’m writing about. It will stand out. Yes, it will stand out without a doubt but how well will it stand out that’s the question. This allows you to strengthen your technique. It also enhances the way you write, and how you want to write as well as enhance your vocabulary.
