In Venezuela we have in the mountain range of the Andes the Sierra Nevada national park. From there you can see the 5 peaks that form it.
Legend has it that the India Caribay existed at that time, she was a woman of one of the prevailing tribes, the Mirripuyes , and she was considered the daughter of the sun and the moon.
Legend has it that her voice was as beautiful as none in the world and she was a lover of nature. When she was on her walks through nature, she could see the shadow of the birds that crossed the sky; and seeing the splendor and majesty of the plumage of the immense birds that flew overhead, she wanted to have their feathers.
She decided that she wanted feathers from those majestic birds to adorn her outfit. So she tried to climb to the top and reach them. Every time she tried to touch them she failed, and that caused her such sadness that she cried a lot. Legend says that her wail of despair was so powerful that the birds contorted and descended and stopped at the top of the mountain range.
Seeing this, she went up and went through them... she was going up and through waterfalls and furrows until she reached the top, and when she tried to touch the feathers of the bird, she felt that the bird was petrified. It had frozen on top.
The India Caribay felt fear and tried to run up the steep mountains and that was when she felt a great gust of frozen wind and the roar of the strong stormy winds of snowfall.
The birds were waking up from their strong ice trap and flinging their loud squawks to the wind, their rapid flapping and flapping blowing all their white plumage into the air. Meanwhile, the India Caribay took refuge from the terrible storm that was happening out there, hoping that all that disaster would ever subside... and it did.
Once she felt safe, she left her shelter and saw how the peaks of the mountains had become as white as the birds were.
This is how the legend of how the Sierra Nevada and its five peaks of the eagles originated. In the great and beautiful Sierra Nevada of the City of Mérida.
Each time when I read "Legend has it" I wonder what you mean by it. Somehow it disturbs the story. What I do understand from this legend is a crying woman can get what she wants. 🤔
