“A School Activity I Once Hated” In school, we all have lots of memories to remember, some old but genuine memories that shaped us into who we are today. Those memories became a part of us that somehow we couldn't forget that easily. No doubt for me, school life was one of the best phases in my existence, in that certain area where many children were raised and molded into brighter and more promising individuals, left me some rememberings worth reminiscing. And most students from elementary, high school or college look forward mostly to the school events and activities. And of course, I am one of those. During elementary days, we were all excited about the events at school, especially the field demonstration where pupils from kinder to grade six will perform a dance routine or exercises on the vast field. Though I could say that I hate to dance, it's one of my most awaited parts of the school year during elementary days. While during high school since we were all teenagers, most students look forward to the school events such as Valentine's day celebrations, where they could send gifts and greetings to their crushes or special someone. Aside from those I mentioned above, the main reason why students love certain celebrations at school is that whenever they are celebrated, automatically there's no class at that hour of the day. While events at school during my school years were exciting, there's this school event I used to hate and wished that didn't exist, and you know what it is? It's the Family Day. This event is a one-day activity with your family, each student is required to bring even one family member to attend such event. This would be a nice chance for the students and their parents to hang out for a moment and make a bond with the others too. It's fascinating, yet for me, it's not on my senses. While everyone was busy preparing some props and decorations in the classroom for the upcoming event, I was there helping but was having a hard time. “Whom should I bring with me?” “Should I attend this event alone again?” Yes, I am always alone on this occasion, the bubbly and jolly me showing my smile to everyone at school was certainly having a bad day during this activity. I never remember that I have attended Family day with a Family member, my father and mother were separated, and my father was always busy at school, and he even didn't attend even a single homeroom meeting since elementary until I graduated. This is one of the hardest parts of being in a broken family, to see your classmates and friends enjoying the day with their parents together was so nice and pleasing in my sight, oh, how I wish to experience it too. At such an event, there were activities for both parents and students to show their teamwork and partnership. There were games held, stage plays and this event runs the whole day. We were mostly advised by our teacher to bring our lunch to be shared with our family members and to a student like me who has no one beside me, I am used to eating my meals alone. Before the event takes place, I am already noting to my teacher that no one will accompany me during the event, I even asked permission to just skip attending but they always said I have to attend this occasion. No choice, despite that I wanted to avoid it, I got no choice but to be present. Though I am happy for my friends seeing them creating fun memories with their parents or siblings, I couldn't hide the truth that I am envious of them. I never experienced having someone beside me during the family day since elementary days until I went to college, sad but that's the truth. To think that it's just a one-day event and just a few hours of activities, no one gives or sacrifices a single quick time for me. So to keep me positive on that day, I just wandered around, and my friends never let me down. They introduced me to their parents and we shared lunch. That's how I celebrated family day events at school, ‘always’. That's my scenario on how I spent my Family Day. An event that was supposed to be one of my best days and memorable, turned out to be my most hated and unwanted event at school. And every time my teachers announced about this occasion, I never felt the excitement my classmates used to feel. Now that I have kids of my own, I always make and remember this experience from my childhood, I don't want them to feel what I felt before during this event. I know they are still young, yet I want them to experience how other kids get excited about Family day. I want them to feel that they are worth my time. Growing up in a broken family seeing my life a lot different from the other kids around me made me stronger and more willful today. Thanked God, He guided me, because of that I even give a lot of importance to having a family. You can't be called a family just for being together. There must be communication that's always on the line, love that makes the bond stronger and vigorous, and harmony among members should always exist. One thing I realized from those moments before, because of my immature mind and feelings, being envious of others gave me a hard time, it took time, and how many school years before I learned to accept that I won't experience what others enjoyed before, simply because I just can't compare their families to mine. And so, I stop expecting miracles. What matters is the relationship between me and my family, especially with my parents, though I am closer to my father than my mom, I never hated her for choosing to leave. Instead, I admire her for being strong for standing up with her decision. And my father, I know he went through a hard time being a teacher, a dad, and a mom all at once. I know both of them did suffer yet they conquered all the challenges themselves alone without letting us know. Somehow, our family that was broken gave me courage in facing life's challenges thrown at me. And this delivered me the thought that sometimes having a complete family won't always be a great choice, especially when there's no love, unity, and respect anymore. It is indeed better to take part ways for the good and the kids' betterment. For sure you wouldn't love to see children suffer emotionally with rumbled thoughts seeing how their parents throw harsh and brutal words at one another nightly. What I suffered during those times gave me a lesson that I will forever mark in my heart and my mind. Having a family is teamwork and needs a great partnership between members, with love, trust and respect this bond will never be broken. Written by: @eommaZel✍🏻🥀
