This article isn't about who has the nicest appearance nor who has the most inner beauty from within. I'll share with you this living epitome of beauty, just kidding. 😁

Once upon a time in our house, there lives a beautiful creature who captures a lot of hearts... of male dogs. Yes, male dogs! and her name is Beauty.

Beauty is a female dog, and she is our pet, our one and only pet dog at home. She has her late brother Beast, who died several years ago. I've shared here before the tale how Beast got his sad death. If you haven't read it yet, you can read this article “Our Late Buddy, Beast”. Let's get back to Beauty, since she's a puppy she's a very clumsy kind of dog, she's playful than her brother. And due to her playfulness, she always makes a mess. As she turned mature, she got so many suitors. Her name Beauty, fits her well.

Beauty is an aspin or “Asong Pinoy”.

This kind of dog breed is only native in the Philippines. Aspins were once called as Askal or “Asong kalye”, which means aso (dog) and kalye (street) because they are commonly seen roaming around the streets.

Aspins are a mixture of different breeds, but it’s not clear what their real ancestors are. But you can easily identify an aspin. Most Aspins are medium-sized dogs that stand at not more than two feet in height. If they're mixed with the other breeds, aspin's genes are usually stronger. Their fur is usually short and rough with varying colors. They can be brown, black, white, brindled, or spotted. Just like Beauty's color, a mixed brown and white.

We let Beauty roam around near the streets too, she is free, and let her outside our house, but she usually doesn't love to roam around, she loves to sleep and loves her belly being rub.

As you can see in the picture, she lies down and gets into this position, which means “rub my belly”. She loves to be rubbed in her belly, just. like most dogs do. What I love about aspins like Beauty was they're more resistant to diseases, shed less fur, and are also good companions to children. My son loves to rub her belly too, and she just lets my son do it.

Every time my son came across her, she'll lie down immediately and get into this position.

Aspin is adorable and resilient just like any other breeds. They're smart too, I remembered before, my uncle got mad at Beauty and his brother Beast when they're still a year old. They used to chase bicyclists and motorists in the street, making my uncle get furious with them. My uncle told them that if they won't stop what they are doing, he will give them to the dog butcher. (That was only to scare them.)

After that incident, they never went out of the street, all they do was hide from my uncle.

Aspins are protective too. I feel more secure when Beauty and Beast came to our home. Even Beast died suddenly, we still have Beauty. She's very protective of strangers. But she usually doesn't bark, she hid from the outsider's back, she won't bite but give the outsider a growl.

Beauty is very jealous too. She's jealous every time she saw us touched or play with the other animals at home, may it be cats or chicken. That jealousy may lead to a commotion against her and the cats specifically.

Aspins are very attentive too and have an active sense. They have a strong sense of smell and good hearing making them sense their owners even when they are still approximately a hundred meters away from home. These dogs are sweet too, surely they'll be the one who will greet you first. when you went home. Just like Beauty, she always greets and fetches my partner every time he went home from work.

But sadly, aspins were mostly the victims of animal cruelty here in my country. As they are caught and seen easily on the streets, some people are cruel against them. Some throw stones at them, some abandoned them and left alone in the streets, some are butchered and eaten; this is very illegal in my country but still, a lot of people do this, and worst some killed these innocent dogs, just like our buddy, Beast.

Now our Beauty is pregnant again, she conceived for how many times already since she became mature. But all her pups were adopted by their new fur parents. We left one of her pups to be with us, we named her “Sandy” sadly, she died because of an infection on her tongue. I have some pictures of Sandy too. See the image below.

Though people considered these native dogs have no breed, they are good at repaying kindness with loyalty and a lot of love. Aspins are loving, willing to protect their hooman, good companions, and can be your best friend too. If you want in life is happiness and protection, breeds are not important, just go for any dog that fits your lifestyle, train him, treat him well, and show him, love.
