In the image you see an ancient whale skeleton unearthed in Egypt's Western Desert, about 190 km southwest of Cairo. 🐋 But wait a minute, how do you think a whale could have come to the desert? 🧐 About 40 million years ago, the area today called Wadi Al-Hitan (or "Whale Valley") was underwater, and more than 400 fossils of sea creatures have been found in the Whale Valley to date. The fossil you see in the image belongs to Basilosaurus, which is 18 meters long and truly gigantic. Research suggests that Basilosaurus was the first whale to have evolved from a terrestrial ancestor and fully adapted to the aquatic world. Whale Valley was included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List in 2005 and is considered to be "the region with the best whale fossils in the world".
