Developed a way to deal with nightmares Researchers from the Sleep Laboratory at the University Hospitals of Geneva and the University of Geneva have developed a way to combat nightmares by playing certain sound recordings. The findings of the study are described in the journal Current Biology. The work was based on the idea that playing sound associated with positive daytime experiences through a wireless headband during sleep can reduce the frequency of nightmares. For this experiment, 36 volunteers who had previously undergone imaginative therapy were selected. Half of the participants did not receive any additional treatment, while the other group had to create an association between a positive version of their nightmare and a sound heard during the imaginative training session. They were asked to exercise daily to stimulate their imagination, as well as to wear a sound device during sleep for two weeks. Both groups saw a decrease in the number of nightmares per week, but the second group, who received the combination therapy, had fewer nightmares immediately after the experiment and also after three months. In addition, such subjects noted a more positive coloring of their dreams. In future studies, the authors want to test this method on a larger sample with different types of population in order to determine the degree of its effectiveness for different people.
