This large structure is called Oberoi Grand, previously known as Grand Hotel. It is located on Chowringhee Road, the heart of Kolkata. That’s why it is very busy area. there are four turns on Chowringhee road where people always face a big traffic here. In the early nineteenth century there was a private residential house at No. 13 Chowringhee Road developed by Colonel Grand. Later Mrs. Annie Monk changed the building into a boarding house and expanded her business by including 14, 15, and 17 Chowringhee Road. While there was a theatre at 16 Chowringhee Road being owned and managed by Arathoon Stephen. Unfortunately the theatre burnded down in 1911. later Stephen bought Mrs. Monk’s building and redeveloped into a hotel which is now called Grand Hotel or Oberoi Grand. However, Stephen was not a member or Oberoi group. After the death of Stephen, in 1930 six people died at the hotel caused by typhoid epidemic in Kolkata. The fault was found in the dranage system at the hotel. And so it was closed at 1937. Mohan Singh Oberoi took the property on rent and reopened it.
