But the most important โ€œthingโ€ about this tragedy is NOT mentioned. That โ€œthingโ€ is that if the people in the Peoples Temple had just read the Bible and rightly divided God's Word, they would have never been deceived by the so-called Reverend Jim Jones. The man was anything but reverent and holy. Even without reading the Bible, his evil intentions should have been easy to see. Like all cult leaders, he was in it for the money and to satisfy his own lusts. This man led a group of people from America, to build a community in Guyana and when he realized his plans were about to go awry โ€ฆ he convinced close to a thousand people to commit suicide by drinking a poisoned flavored drink. Many reports said it was Kool-aid, which is a reputable American brand of flavored drink mix that has been advertised for years and that American children have been drinking for at least half a century. For the record โ€ฆ to be fair โ€ฆ the people did not drink Kool-aid. They drank Flavor Aid, which is a cheaper knock-off brand of drink mix, not as good as the real Kool-aid. Nevetheless โ€ฆ the Jonestown massacre happened over 40 years ago. Since that time, whenever you hear the phrase "Drinking the Kool-Aid", it has an entirely different and twisted meaning from kids enjoying a cool fruit-like drink during summer time. It is โ€œan expression used to refer to a person who believes in a possibly doomed or dangerous idea because of perceived potential high rewards.โ€ (Quote per Wikipedia) Not everybody died In Jonestown. One old lady actually slept through the event and a few other people chose not obey his suicide order and figured out a way to escape. Jim Jones did not drink the poison! He committed suicide; gunshot wound to the head. In The End, since many of the victims were consenting adults, frankly, the only ones I really feel sorry are the innocent children who were given a poisoned flavored drink to swallow. I really don't know how people can let themselves get led away to destruction like that. And yet โ€ฆ this scenario repeats itself over and over and over again. WHY?????????? No really. WHY?? There are obvious WARNINGS!! Such as??? Such as โ€ฆ ~ Any time you're in a โ€œcommunityโ€ and the male leader has โ€œfree accessโ€ to ALL of the women, including little girls โ€ฆ THAT'S A RED FLAG!! ~ Any time you're in a โ€œcommunityโ€ and the leader wears Armani suits, lives in a mansion, and own a rolls royce or other expensive car (or cars) AND you are not allowed to have any earthly belongings โ€ฆ THAT'S A RED FLAG!! ~ If you should decide that you made the wrong decision and you want to leave โ€ฆ BUT YOU CAN'T โ€ฆ THE RED FLAG IS NOW ON FIRE!! You better figure out how to ESCAPE!! You might have walked in there but you better RUN OUT!! * * * (NOTE: If you want to know what triggered these thoughts, I watched movie trailer about 2 women trying to escape from a cult. I thought to myself: 'Eh! This movie is just sensationalized fiction. What about real cults?')
