Horatio Alger Jr. (1832 - 1899) is considered an American Charles Dickens; although his writings were never so popular. It's just that the subject matter of his books was similar. Like Dickens, he wrote novels about impoverished children and their rise from humble beginnings to a better life through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. He also biographies of famous people, such as American Presidents James A. Garfield and Abraham Lincoln. His first work was published in 1849.
