The Absurdity of Death
Death is the contradiction of life. While we want to exist and continue to exist, death put an end to this desire. We enjoy eating, playing, working, experiencing and exploring the world, conversing with people, engaging with the challenges of life, and enjoying and celebrating life itself. We enjoy every moment of our life. We enjoy every part of it. We do not want to lose it, we hold onto it and this is despite all the challenges it brings. But all this ceases as death takes them away from us. We are made to believe that we take control of our lives, that life is what we make it. We believe in this. We are in school because we believe in the bright future of which we are said to be creators. This is the reason why we keep on planning our lives. From childhood up yo the present, we live our lives according to our own individual plans. We set immediate goals and we also set long-term ones. Some of us want to become lawyers, engineers, architects, doctors, accountants, teachers, politicians, and so on. We want to be successful and be of help to other people. All of this is according to our plans. This is what we intend. But tomorrow or in a little while, before we realize our plans, we may no longer exist. The sad thing is, sometimes death comes at the peak of our success. Human freedom and death seem to be incompatible. This is an absurd condition, the condition where our intention is met with silence and indifference of the world. But, if death is part of life, then it must have a role to play in us. Does death bring meaning to our lives? The absurdity of death lies on the fact that while we are free to fashion our lives, death comes unexpectedly. It is an absurd experience because it is an ultimate reality of life.
