The country has been through a lot. It faced a lot of challenges. There are wars the country have won, and a lot of colonization that overcame. We are all aware with the history of the Philippines since we started studying about it. From the discovery of the Philippines by the West and Revolution, the colonization of other foreign countries, and to how we fought for the freedom of our country.
We have heard the history, and we also studied them. It is very important to have the awareness and knowledge about the place you are born from. The history will say so much about the country. It reflects into the tradition and culture as well.
We have been colonized by Spaniards in the year 1565 to 1898. The Spanish Rule became the general leader of the country. They brought with them their culture, traditions, religion, and even their laws. The country became open with the unified political governance through the colonizers. They were behind the Christianity and our codes of law. The things that they learned in modernization has been taught around the country as well.
On the contrary, Americans made their way to get us out of the claws of Spaniards. The Treaty of Paris happened. From 1898, we were under the American rule. We have seen their cultures and way of living as well. They contributed in the traditions and culture of Filipinos, until we had our independence in 1946. There are a lot of happenings.
The colonizers left our country and we had our independence, but we cannot deny the fact that they have been part of our lives. We have some of their cultures as well. There are beliefs that changed, traditions that appeared, and cultures that have spread across the nation. It is because most of the Filipinos before thought that we will be living forever with them. We are known to be good at adapting things, especially cultures.
We are always open in learning things and trying to live with them once we saw and experienced the convenience it can give to us. For example, we have learned to cook some recipes from Spain like Pasta and more. It means that within the years under their ruling, most Filipinos started eating and cooking these recipes from them and we have them until now.
Another example is how American ruling taught us more about political concerns. They helped us have a better economic and political system. Yes, we will not forget the things that they did wrong. Though we are aware about the abuse of power of these colonizers, they also contributed a lot in the improvement of the country.
They left us teachings and developments that became our advantage among other countries. The colonizers also gave us the opportunity to improve and enhance other concerns in the country.
As a student who is studying the Philippine History, I can say that this subject or these lessons were important. I get to remember the history of my own country and understand more about them.
At first, I thought that it was completely nonsense to study the history since I think I know enough about them. But I was wrong. I am still not knowledgeable enough to understand the situation that happened centuries ago. I will only do that if I study the history with all my heart, ears, and eyes. I need to see, hear, and feel the importance of studying them.
