Police Brutality in the Philippines

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that"

This is an important message in the world today that we can connect to the police brutality happening in the Philippines. This quote is about a fundamental truth of the universe, and the corresponding relationship in the human heart. It simply means that you consider the human bond to be stronger than their hate. If you match them hate for hate, the world will not be a better place for your effort. The most disruptive thing we can do to the script is to show them love and compassion, and blow the narrative apart. The question here is does the police who are brutal are willing to try?

Let's jump in to the topic of police brutality that is happening here in the Philippines. Remember the cop who shot mother and son in Paniqui, Tarlac? The video has made its way around social media. A heated argument that was initially about firecrackers devolved into violence and ended up with two unarmed individuals crumpling to the ground, dead from gunshot wounds to the head. And the person holding the literal smoking gun was, no surprise, a policeman.

It’s a chilling video; one that will stay in the minds of those who’ve seen it for a long time. But make no mistake, a huge reason this issue blew up the way it did is because of this video. There’s little room for doubt about what exactly happened in one of the most shocking instances of police overstepping their bounds and abusing the power they wield.

The public wasn’t prepared to deal with a video that displays in full view the monster that the past 4 years had created an emboldened and unaccountable police force. That policeman knew he was being recorded. It didn’t faze him. His casual manner implies it was not the first time he did it. This is just the latest among many incidents: from Kian, to Winston Ragos, to the 4 soldiers massacred by policemen in Sulu.

I therefore conclude, that there is a huge difference in the mindset of policemen between the official "by the book" way and the "this is how we really do it."

There has been an issue about them that they have killed and paid others to kill thousands of alleged drug offenders in a way of extrajudicial executions that resulted to crimes against humanity. It is unlawful and it violate the right to life as stated in both Philippine and International law. The Philippines should move away from lawlessness and lethal violence and reorient its drug policies towards a model based on the protection of health and human rights.

Meanwhile, a video of shooting by the senior master sergeant of the mother and child last year. The policeman is found guilty by the court and the prosecution. He will serve a maximum sentence with no possible parole and worst case would be a life sentence in prison. However, his lawyer advice him to plea not guilty for the evidence are clear that he is guilty of the crime. It only shows that the fact that poor people are denied, the same protection and respect has hardened perceptions so that this is a war on the poor. Our Filipino mentality and conscience is based on self-entitlement made out of lies to uplift ourselves. That goes with being religious too. We are over the top, judgemental, self-righteous liars with a filthy backyard!

The human right crisis should be solved as soon as possible to prevent the worst result. Decisive action must be taken or else the international community should turn to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to carry out a preliminary examination into these killings, including the involvement of officials at the very top of the government.

Political analyst Ferrer says: “We have to strengthen and insulate the state institutions from the machinations of the national leadership, transform the orientation of local governments and wean them away from presidential patronage; and put a stop to political violence through the rule of law.”

Police brutality has been one of the most common problems in every country. News and articles about it never slipped a day. We always hear and watch news about how some policemen took advantage of their power. How they use it to abuse people and to go beyond the boundary.

In the Philippines, we all know that media never fail us to show the real color and identity of some of our policemen. It's sad that instead of protecting the citizens, they are the ones who kill them and abuse them. Instead of being aware of the human rights, they seem to be ignorant when they are holding that gun.

Brutal talaga ung trending na pulis na un, we have to question his character. Kya ang mga pulis dapat din may psychological at character evaluation aside from work assessment kc their work can make or kill anyone. Buti nmn at life sentence ung hatol, he deserve it.

Yes, sobrang brutal niya talaga. And anong alam natin kung ilan silang mga pulis na ganun. He truly deserved a life sentence sa ginawa nya. May pa-plead pa siyang not guilty. How come he's not guilty for the crime eh kitang-kita naman kung gaano kabrutal yung ginawa niya.

Hahaha.

Smh 🙄
