Use of AI in Instagram

A.        Artificial Intelligence and Networking

            Instagram is an American photo and video-sharing social networking service owned by Facebook, Inc. It uses AI in researching human behavior and culture since the app wants user to feel like a part of a large community. To do this, the company needs to understand how people around the world behave. The main issue is that the amount of data this requires is incredibly large. This is where AI comes into play. It is capable of analyzing massive amounts of data at breakneck speed, which speeds up research by decades. The search function and explore page is also improved since they are accurate in giving recommendations. It isn’t limited by what you like or who you follow. It tracks your activity closely and reflects everything it sees. It also improved personalizing the feed. Before the change, people would miss around 50% of their friends’ posts, according to Instagram’s internal research. The new algorithm promises to deliver 90% of all the content posted by your friends and family. This announcement initially received some backlash, but it seems that the users have gotten used to it by now. Earlier this year, Instagram introduced the offensive comment filter. Once you toggle it on, it hides all the inappropriate comments, particularly those that groups at risk of discrimination are exposed to. The filter is also capable of notifying Instagram of any repeated offensive patterns, so that the company can take necessary action. Recently, Instagram decided to take this a step further by introducing machine-learning technology that is able to detect bullying in photos. It’s still in the works, but it could potentially make a world of change when it comes to cyberbullying. Another useful AI-based filter is the Spam filter. It has the ability to eliminate fake messages written in nine different languages. Once it detects spam, it automatically removes it from users’ Direct Messages. In addition, Instagram stories show first the most frequent story that the user always pick. It also shows the suggested people that you may know where you might like to follow them or follow back.

            Instagram is a supportive online community, one that inspires business and brand growth through professional connections if you show your desire to support other accounts. It is also an application of networking. With any social media networking sites, users, in this case recruiters, need to decide if they are using it for personal, business or both. Most people think of Instagram as a platform to share real-time moments. It is where you can start a chat through direct message, connect through Instagram groups, and find similar accounts using hashtags. Hashtags provides a way for others to find your photos, like your photos, and gain a few followers or at least provide the Instagrammer with some insight on who you are. Ultimately when you do decide to follow someone and comment on one of their pictures, you are drawing that person in. Sometimes a simple “Like” shows interest. A well timed comment can lead to conversations and over time create a professional-yet-friendly connection. You can also tag your friends in your photos, use the Explore tab, and follow accounts.

 

B.         Reaction Paper

            Through Instagram, I became interested in photography. I started seeing things aesthetically. I can share my works where everyone can see it with the use of hash tags. I prefer to upload images here instead of Facebook since Instagram has feed that I really like to see. It is like browsing through the memories of your life. It is also quite private for me since I know most of the people seeing my works unlike Facebook where there are people you do not know and still you're friends in that social media. I also upload my stories here rather than my days in messenger so that my close friends will only know what am I doing in that specific day. Speaking of stories, I noticed that the user I always looked up its story is the most recommended story when I open up my Instagram. The least one is at the end of the line. The design is also simple and easy to access. You can upload one or multiple photo and decide if you will edit it. Then. You can write a caption, tag people, add location, and share it to Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr. Aside from this, I can also follow my favorite artists and be updated to their posts. There is also a notification when they are broadcasting live through their story. In this way, there is an interaction between them and the fans. I also find it interesting to search in Instagram since the result is all related to the ones I searched.

 

C.        Critique

            Instagram is the paradise of photos and videos. It is where we can upload our works - be it for aesthetic or just a photo dump. It is where we can express our creativeness and connect to every people in sharing the common interest. Through the use of hashtags, the uploaded photo or video will be categorized and the people will have no trouble in searching. It also campaigns the anti-bullying program by eliminating the explicit comments. It also filter spam messages or fake news. It is where you can follow your idols or favorite artists. You can also interact with them when they broadcast live in their Instagram story by flooding the heart button and commenting. By following them, you can see their updates when they upload new photo or video and you have the will if you will like it or maybe leave a comment in it. A direct message is also featured where you can leave a message or chat any users of the Instagram.

 

D.        Innovation

            Several users use the Instagram for business purpose. That is why, I think that Instagram may adapt to have a shopping experience. It is where you can see the product, its details, and price like the other shopping applications. Then, when you plan on buying it, it will take you to a new window or page where you can purchase it. It would also be a good thing if Instagram can detect copyright images or videos. Many artist post their artworks in Instagram and later on found it posted in other accounts claiming it was theirs. It would be great if it could adapt the YouTube's copyright filtering feature to diminish these incidents. I also noticed that the messaging tab in Instagram is still lacking. It would be nice if there is additional options like ignoring the message, marking as unread if you do not know the person chatting you.
