Manila, like any other city in the whole world, is a city of stress. People who came from rural areas viewed it as a place of opportunity and expected immediate achievement and success. But they do not know that life in Manila is tough and highly competitive, difficult to find a place to live, crowded streets and parks, and fast living. Students interact with universities around Manila. They come from the provinces where they are recognized by the student body. They came to Manila with high expectations of academics, social life, and athletes. But they encounter a wide variety of frustrations, including the uninteresting, uninhibited, and hostile environment. Immigrant families to Manila are vulnerable to child abuse, youth frustration, and divorce. In addition there is a problem of children wanting to be independent but parents who reject them that way because traditional Filipino parents, especially those from the countryside, feel that young adults are capable to take care of themselves or they are unaware of the responsibilities of freedom from family in a city that seeks social risks. New comers in Manila are feeling scared, others are shocked. Some feel energetic, others feel endangered. Still others are confused.
