It almost hurts my wrinkles to post this one in n/RetroGaming but the Dreamcast is almost 21 years old now. πŸ§“πŸ»πŸ§“πŸ»πŸ§“πŸ» Does anybody remember these things? Unlike any other memory cards we've ever seen, the Dreamcast used what they called a VMU (Visual Memory Unit) to hold save games. It was honestly pathetically small in storage, but it came with some additional features we've never seen since. The screen itself displays in-game context, such as ammo, maps, place/position, stats. etc. while playing games. The controllers included a small cut-out so you could see the screen of the memory cards that was holding the top slot in the controller. When unplugged from the controller, the screen had features that allowed you to manage your saved games, and play small games that you could install on it. By far the best one I ever came across was a game you could "buy" in a game called Time Stalkers. The game itself was an RPG, but the VMU game was a full-on FPS Dungeon Crawler. Another really cool feature they provided was the ability to plug one VMU into another and transfer save games back and forth. Each one of these ran off 2 CR2025 batteries which lasted a very short amount of time, and were at the time (and probably still are) fairly expensive to replace. All that said, they're still one of the coolest gadgets I can think of, and a great use of space and technology. #Retrogaming
