In the bioengineering department of the University of Illinois, researchers have created small ‘biobots’, partly out of the synthetic gel and partly out of muscle cells, that can move on their own. Whilst only a small scientific step, this is the building blocks for ‘nanotechnology’: tiny devices that could exist within the human body, freely detecting illness and administering medication.
