Honey is a sweet, viscous fluid produced by bees from the nectar of flowers or from secretions of living parts of plants or excretions of plant-sucking insects. The bees collect, transform and combine it with the enzyme invertase contained in bee saliva and store it in the honeycombs where it matures. It is used for symptomatic relief of colds and coughs. Its sweetness and syrupy texture would soothe sore throats, but its antioxidant content and antimicrobial effect would also play a role. Colds are popularly combated in some countries by sweetening lemon juice or onion tea with honey.  _______________________________________ La miel es un fluido dulce y viscoso producido por las abejas a partir del néctar de las flores o de secreciones de partes vivas de plantas o de excreciones de insectos chupadores de plantas. Las abejas lo recogen, transforman y combinan con la enzima invertasa que contiene la saliva de las abejas y lo almacenan en los panales donde madura. Es usada para el alivio sintomático del resfriado y la tos. Su dulzura y textura de jarabe calmarían el dolor de garganta, pero también influirían su contenido antioxidante y su efecto antimicrobiano. Los catarros se combaten popularmente en algunos países endulzando con miel al zumo de limón o el té de cebolla.
