Hamsters are rodents (order Rodentia) and have become established as popular small house pets.

The best-known species of hamster are the following:

  1. golden or Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus), which is the type most commonly kept as pets.

  2. dwarf hamster

  3. Campbell's dwarf hamster (Phodopus campbelli)

  4. the winter white dwarf hamster (Phodopus sungorus) and

  5. the Roborovski hamster (Phodopus roborovskii).

Hamsters in the wild remains in underground during the day to avoid being caught by predators. They eat primarily seeds, fruits, and vegetation, and sometimes they eat burrowing insects.Physically, they are stout-bodied with distinguishing features that include elongated cheek pouches extending to their shoulders, which they use to carry food back to their burrows, as well as a short tail and fur-covered feet. They have thick, silky fur, which can be long or short, colored black, grey, honey, white, brown, yellow, red, or a mix, depending on the species.

Senses

Hamsters have poor eyesight; they are nearsighted and colorblind.Their eyesight leads to them not having a good sense of distance or knowing where they are at. But this is not a hindrance to them as they have good senses that will notify them especially when danger is around.

Diet

Hamsters are omnivores, they can eat meat and vegetables. Even though hamsters are allowed to have both fruits and vegetables, it is important to understand exactly which ones they can have and how much. Hamsters in the wild eat seeds, grass, and even insects. Hamsters do best with fruits that donā€™t have a lot of citrus in them and most green leafy vegetables. Hamsters should not be fed junk food, chocolate, garlic, or any salty/sugary foods. Hamsters tend to love peanut butter but it is important to feed it to them carefully because this sticky food can get stuck in their cheeks.

Hamsters make great pets to everyone because though they are low maintenance, they are super fun to play with and watch and are quite interactive with people and their environment, tho sometimes they will bite you if they are not tamed. If you are ready for commitment, try hamsters as a pet 'cause they will bring you extra happiness in lifešŸ˜‰
