Mary and Joseph were forced to go to Bethlehem because the Roman emperor had ordered that a census, or record, of all people be taken in their village. After several days of journeying on a donkey, Mary and Joseph arrived at Bethlehem and were told there were no places to stay. The inns were completely booked. An innkeeper assured Joseph that they may remain in his stable because Mary was due any minute. Mary and Joseph sat on the hay in a barn with sleeping animals. Mary gave birth in the barn after going into labor. The sleeping baby's sole place to lay was most likely in the animals' trough, known as the manger. An angel came to shepherds guarding their sheep in the pastures near Bethlehem around this time. The angel announced the birth of the Savior and Messiah, Jesus Christ. The shepherds rushed quickly to discover baby Jesus, whom the angels had told them would be lying in the manger. After some time, three wise men, sometimes known as magi, saw the dazzling star in the sky that rested above the place where Jesus was born. The three wise men journeyed from a distant eastern kingdom to find the new monarch. During the wise men's journey, Herod, King of Judah, met with them and requested them to return and tell him where the infant king was so that he may adore him as well. The wise men carried on to Bethlehem and discovered Jesus exactly where the star indicated. They prostrated themselves before the Savior and presented him with presents of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They therefore took a another route home, knowing that King Herod did not mean to honor Jesus but rather to murder the baby.
