BOX BED in Austria. A box bed, also known as a closed bed, is an old-fashioned type of bed that looks like a closet. It appeared in the Middle Ages and was common in northern and central Europe until the 19th century. The box bed was closed on all four sides by wooden walls like a drawer. They were entered by drawing aside some curtains, opening a hinged door or a sliding door. The bed could be freestanding and have short legs, to avoid moisture from the floor, or be built into a hole in the wall. #photography A large oak arch, the same length as the bed, was often placed in front of the box bed. This was always a "seat of honour", and also served to climb into bed. It was also used to store clothes, underwear and bedding. #noisecash #randomthoughts Sometimes they have two floors.
