Filipinos have a lot of traditions and norms which became a part of our daily lives.It maybe out of the vocabulary or not by the book but became a norms for some of us. Just like the word repetition, repeating words for the second time.Have you remembered Ms.Venus Raj who became the representative of Philippines for Miss Universe. And during the question and answer portion, she used the word "major-major problem", she repeatedly says the word. Not a surprise for me because Filipinos usually using words in repetition, like " jun-jun, an-an, ton-ton, jack-jack, and many more this sounds funny with other people but for us, it's just a normal situation. Another thing that most Filipino words tradition is using idiomatic expression and became our normal way of talking. 1."Pagputi ng uwak"(When the crow turns white This expression usually used referring to some people who have debt and didn't pay for a long time." Someone asks, I want my money back. The person replied, I have no money today, maybe next month. The person replied, "when will you pay me when the crow turns white. These words were commonly used by elders but now the new generation had already learned it. 2."Aabutin ng siyam-siyam means, nine-nine" This expression refers to procrastinating with a specific task, like by saying, "ill do it later, in Tagalog;tsaka na lang, mamaya na po, this was always a speech by kids or even young people who were told to wash the dishes or if parents told them to answer their modules, they always say, "I'll don't later mom, haven't finished my ML yet, so real with my kids. 3."Suntok sa buwan", blow to the moon This idiomatic expression is commonly used when a person is having a dream which seems impossible or too good to be true. Or just like a man who dreams to have a girlfriend like a celebrity or someone higher than him, who is famous, rich, and having a position in society. The people will say to him," that's impossible, suntok sa buwan yang ginagawa no". Also, refer to a situation that has a goal to achieve a high profit for a month and giving his all to invest in something just to earn, they called it, "suntok sa buwan". Two of the famous idiomatic expression used by some Filipino actors and movies. A." Anak ng Titing" We don't know who Titing is, hehe really it's just an expression. But in a movie, this expression was used, when someone is upset or disappointed, maybe it has a bad side of saying it if it is not delivered in the right way. B." Papunta ka pa lang, pabalik na ako", I just coming back This is a line used by the late Filipino actor, Mr.Eddie Garcia in one of his films with Joko Diaz I was a fan of them, I've watched that already when I was 7 years old until now. These words express that elder people know better than us in some ways, that's why we need to pay attention to them with their opinion and advice. Most elders say, that the youth today want everything to be done in a short cut, they are tired of under on a process, they like instant success. Does it true? 4."Itaga mo sa Bato" It means when a person says this, he /she will surely fulfill his/her promises. Its like to swear on something to comply with what he used to say like; I promise that I will never leave you. Mark my words, I will achieve my dreams in the end. My debts will be paid off next month I swear. I promise to come back when the time is right. Please hold on to the memories and the promises made for each otherr. 5."I lista mo sa tubig"write it in the water This tells being vague, just like a debt unpaid for how many years. It also suggests to forget a situation or place which cause you too much trouble because there's no such pen that can be used to write anything in the water. I have a painful experience in my life that I need to write in the water or else I'll be living miserable life. 6."mabilis pa sa alas kuatro"to leave in a mad rash When there is a pack of goods in our place the residents here, leave in a mad rush(mabilis pa sa alas kuatro )going to the barangay hall. To be back at work in a hurry especially when the bell rang or the time is approaching. These expression maybe helpful or maybe not, but it is been used with some people here in our place.The negative side with this is, when the receiver of these words didn't know how does it mean maybe turn upset. Other expressions used by us, specifically bisaya; 1.Balik pay 08 We say this when we go to a place and found out that it was very unpleasant or something had happen to us when we were there. 2.tamnan tekag kawayan A person who have an enemy whom he cannot forgive even if the person ask for forgiveness. 3.hanginon Refers to someone who is windy or boastful. Some of these expressions are not reasonable to be used especially with kids because it has a negative influence also of of having hatred and unforgiving.Thats why as a parent I am very sensitive when I hear this expression with my kids.
